Ba Duan Jin

The Treasures

This is the qigong practice of the Eight Brocades, or Baduanjin. The Ba Duan Jin qigong is one of the most popular forms of Chinese qigong used as exercise. The whole form is broken down into eight separate exercises, each focusing on a different physical area and energy Meridian. As mind–body integration, it is considered to be an effective exercise in promoting health. Regular practice is believed to improve organ function and overall well-being as well as release stagnation and lower inflammation, and bring balanced flowing healthy chi or energy.

8 brocade Qigong from Taoist Wudang, China. As a traditional Chinese health and fitness, Ba Duan Jin, or Eight-section Exercises, Eight Pieces of Brocade, 8 Silken Movements, or 8 Silk Weaving also known as the Eight Treasures, is one of the oldest Qigong / Chi kung exercise for health and well being in China. It is a fascinating qigong form with a long and colorful history. Many believe that the Brocades date back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279) when Ba Duan Jin was developed in the 12th century by Marshal Yueh Fei, in order to improve the vitality of his soldiers. with fitness practice for improving healing, vitality, and longevity. According to historical writings, Yue Fei entered the army at 9 years old and rapidly rose within the ranks and by 26, he was a general. He developed Eight Brocades to support the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance of his warriors.

However, this history is disputed. There are also cave drawings in tombs dating back to 168 AD. Then in 6th Century AD Bodhi Dharma, founder of Chan Buddhism brought Yogic influences from India. The Shaolin practices came through Bodhi Dharma, and some say that the Eight Brocades is a Shaolin practice.

Chi Kung is fluid and adaptable, changing with the times. The Brocades have been adapted - and continue to change and be adapted.

Benefits
Stretch the upper body, nourish the major organs, calm your emotions and strengthen your core and lower body. Each brocade nourishes a pair of yin/yang organs. Breathe in the positive emotion of each organ and breathe out the lower vibration and clear it away. With easy movements and impressive effects on the health, the Treasures are a gem in China's health and fitness culture. It improves the respiratory system, limb strength, and flexibility of the joints, and fortifies the nerves, as well as enhances the general balance. It improves the cardiovascular function and helps to cure such illnesses as coronary artery scleroses and osteoporosis. It strengthens one's immune system to a degree, and delays the ageing process, so as to increase the life span. It also improves one's mental health.

Many versions of Ba Duan Jin
Ba Duan Jin Qigong has over one thousand years of history. Through the centuries many versions of Ba Duan Jin has been developed and promoted by practitioners throughout China. There are Taoist Ba Duan Jin, Buddhist Ba Duan Jin, Medical Qigong Ba Duan Jin, Health Qigong etc.
The Chinese lettering of the word Baduanjin
- Ba means eight. Apart from counting, the number 8 here also carries a symbolic meaning, as 8 angular segments form an octagon, which in the theory of the 8 trigrams as developed in the Yi Jing (Book of Changes) stands for a completed circle, the symbol of perfection.

- Duan For a similar symbolism related to martial arts, Duan is a classifyer for sections, segments, parts (of).

- Jin is made up of the compounds gold and silk - together precious/bright silk, i.e. brocade. Thus, the combination Baduanjin means 8 (pieces of) brocade, in short '8 brocades' or more abstract 8 bright and precious things, hence 8 treasures. Concerning the meaning behind the signs, the 8 exercises are called 'treasures' because of the positive health effects that their regular practice is said to have. They called each exercise 'Brocade' because it is believed that, after practicing the sequence, one feels like wearing a dress made of a very rich, exquisite, hard-to-find, precious, soft silk fabric. Tai Chi, Qigong and Corona Virus
Website
One technique that is getting a lot of play on the internet is the use of Tai Chi and a set of Qigong exercises called the Eight Silken Forms or Ba Duan Jin as an adjunct to treatment in patients in Wuhan with Coronavirus. Tai Chi is not a cure for Coronavirus. However it can play a vital role in recovery. Because Tai Chi and the Eight Silken forms involve breathing exercises and mild levels of physical activity they can form a vital bridge between being on a ventilator to being able to breathe on your own. The longer a patient is lying in bed, the more their lungs fill with fluid making it harder and harder to breathe. The sooner the patient is up and moving around the better. Tai Chi and other Qigong exercises can be an effective bridge between being a victim and being an active participant in your own healing. The Chinese are encouraging people who are under quarantine to keep themselves healthy with some indoor exercises like Tai Chi and Ba Duan Jin. The Chinese are also encouraging recovering patients to use Tai Chi to help them get their breathing back and get their strength back.

Ba Duan Jin (8 Brocade Exercise) Qi Gong

In this video, the exercises are performed almost as Yoga with longer holding.

The Shao in "Shaolin" refers to "Mount Shaoshi", a mountain in the Songshan mountain range. The lin in "Shaolin" means "forest". Literally, the name means "Monastery in the woods of Mount Shaoshi".

Complete Routine of Shaolin Ba Duan Jin recorded at the weekend retreat in February 2019 at the Shaolin Temple Europe located in Otterberg / Kaiserslautern in Germany.

Shaolin Ba Duan Jin can be translated as 8 Brocade (Valuable) Exercises.

It consists of 8 exercises aiming in the development of strong and flexible muscles and tendons:

A question.
Why are most exercises performed "only" once (except for the last exercise "Clicking heels 7 times") in comparison to the 8 brocades in Health Qigong, where all exercises are performed six times or even more? I realize that the exercises are done much slower and all end poses are held longer than in Health Gigong, which obviously makes it physically harder. It also seems that there is more overall muscle and tendon tension in the Shaolin version in comparison to the softer version in Health Qigong. And how should the breathing be when practising Shaolin Ba Dua Jin?"

Response from Shaolin Temple Europe
This video is just for showing the movements. In order to get some benefit it is necessary to take the movements separately and practice them intensely. Afterwards you can put the routine back together again and practice them together. Each movement slowly and conscious about what you're doing. Repeat often.

The Baduanjin qigong(???) is one of the most common forms of Chinese qigong used as exercise. Variously translated as Eight Pieces of Brocade, Eight-Section Brocade, Eight Silken Movements or Eight Silk Weaving, the name of the form generally refers to how the eight individual movements of the form characterize and impart a silken quality (like that of a piece of brocade) to the body and its energy. The Baduanjin is primarily designated as a form of medical qigong, meant to improve health. This is in contrast to religious or martial forms of qigong. However, this categorization does not preclude the form's use by martial artists as a supplementary exercise, and this practice is frequent.
