#7 is 18 Forms

Mimi writes:
Qigong circulates the blood without taxing the lungs. Whenever I do forms like the Taiji (Taichi) Qigong Shibashi, or 18 Forms shown in this video, I can feel this. My hands feel toasty and my whole body warm and full of energy. This is good news for someone like myself, who has never been drawn to things like running or aerobic sports! This form in particular is also calming and meditative. Its gentle movements flow continuously from one to the other in a relaxing, soft yet powerful way.

Originally created in 1979 by Lin Housheng combining Yang style taiji with qigong to help treat health conditions such as back pain, lung disease and hypertension, the 18 Forms have become one of the most popular forms of qigong today. In fact, in 1991, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recommended the promotion of the Taiji Qigong Shibashi routine worldwide!

Though the sequence is just over 40 years old, its foundational principles reflect classical concepts from Taiji (Taichi) and China's thousands of years of energy practices. Regular practice supports the health and vitality of the body, calmness and creativity in the mind and transformative breathing.

I find that the forms specifically work to build posture, tone, and healthy range of movement all without putting stress on the joints. Most of all, it's a wonderful way to connect to nature, as many of the forms invite us to do things like separate clouds, push waves, dance with rainbows, or touch the sea and look at the sky. You can see a short sample of each form, done at normal speed.
